Classroom Behavior And How It Can Be Managed
When you are teaching students in high school the action that you deal with mostly is inappropriate behavior as well as reduced study skills. Going through behavior problems is something that most students go through since its part of growing up. It is not the same for everyone for some it’s more than for others. Special kids can be separated from the regular ones from their behavior. Let’s look at several ways you can manage classroom behavior.
Tell the students what your behavior expectations are about. When the school year is starting let them know what you need from them regarding behavior. Create states that will keep the students in check from the first day they attend school. Go through the rules together with the students and make it a tradition in the classroom. Create signs that become warning signs if someone is in the wrong. Monitor the students to see if they are following the rules.
Keep on checking if anyone has had any adverse reaction and offered them feedback. If you have a student who is continuously having lousy behavior keep a close eye on them and also avoid it at an early stage. Use severe voice and gestures to remind a student who is involved in bad behavior. When a student behaves appropriately to make sure that they get a reward.
Reinforcement such us social, exercise, physical, consumable and harmful strengthening should be applied in making sure that the rules are followed. Instead of appreciating good behavior with physical reward one could use tokens. The symbols can be used later to backup reinforcement. If the students are more advanced in age you should use contingency contracts. The contact should be drafted by you and the student saying that when they behave appropriately they will be rewarded. Shaping is a way that you use to prepare good action in small steps. Shaping can be used to introduce functional practice or enforce to the one living.
Use a role model to explain the sort of behavior you are expecting. When one of the students does something right use them as an example explaining that’s what you want from the rest. If you are working on a specific student make sure you students their age are around to listen and learn what are your expectations. This way you will be meeting on both sides. The students should take part in the program of improving their behavior by creating goals, preventing situations that could affect their behavior, assessing themselves and knowing how they should be rewarded for their excellent response. Parents should also be part of the behavior management program, so it is useful.
